# The Library

> One list of every app, file and artifact in your account, across every workspace, with search, type and workspace filters and a pinned block at the top.

Library is one of the tabs at the top of the sidebar's list, and it is one list
of everything in your account that is not a chat, across every workspace you
are in. Three kinds of thing go in it.

- Apps: the web apps your agents have built, in any of your workspaces.
- Files: things saved into a workspace's files, so they have a home you can go
back to. Documents, presentations, diagrams and interactive widgets (a
calculator, a wiring diagram you can click through) all land here once
they are saved to a workspace.
- Artifacts: things an agent made inside a chat and never filed anywhere, so
the chat is where they live. A widget that was never saved to a workspace
  is listed here.

Most other ways to reach these things are somewhere you have to be first: a
workspace's Files and apps tab, the panel beside one chat, a project. The
Library is the version of that question you can ask from anywhere, so it is
a tab beside your chats rather than a page inside a workspace. It lists the
same things for whatever the sidebar's picker is showing: everything, one
workspace or one project. See [Your sidebar, your lists and your settings](https://bolter.chat/help/your-sidebar-and-settings) for the rest of
the sidebar.

The Library tab is not there until there is something in it. It follows the
scope you picked: it appears when that workspace or project has apps, files or
artifacts, goes away when you switch to one that has none, and comes back when
you switch back, so it can come and go as you move between workspaces. The All
tab lists the same things mixed in with your chats.

## Opening a row

Clicking a row opens the thing itself, full size, in the main column, and
leaves the sidebar's list as it was so the next one is a click away. An app takes
over the main column the way a clicked app link does, with a button to open it
in a new tab, a refresh button and a close button along the top. A file or an artifact opens on the Library's
own view as the document, the diagram or the deck itself. Neither takes you to
a workspace page: a file's workspace is named under its row, and the
workspace's Files and apps tab still lists it, but that tab is where to browse
a workspace, not the door to one thing you have already found.

## Talking about it beside it

Every document, file, widget, deck and app names the chat it lives in at the
top, with the chat's picture: first among the buttons at the top right of a
document, an app or a preview, and in a deck's title bar. It is the same
wherever you opened the thing from: the Library, a project, an app on a
workspace's Apps and Files tab, or the card in the chat itself. On a
computer, clicking the chat's name opens that chat beside the thing, live, so
you can read the document and ask for changes without leaving it. Click the
name again to put the chat away.

- Opened from a card in its chat, the thing starts with the chat already open
beside it on Just this, the replies to that card, since that is where you
came from. Switch to Whole chat for the rest of the conversation, or click
the chat's name to put it away for this card. Opening a card from the panel
there opens it in the same place.
- The less used buttons, such as Open in files, Copy URL and Ask Omni, are on
the menu behind the three dots at the end of the header.

- The chat opens on the message the thing was posted in, not on the newest
message, and what you type starts out as a reply to that message, so the
agents know which thing you mean. Close the reply to send a plain message.
- Whole chat and Just this switch between the full conversation and only the
replies to that message. Just this is the same thread you see on the
message in the chat itself, so everything said here is in the chat too.
- The chat sits as a column on the right. Drag its left edge to make it
wider. When the window is too narrow for both at that width, the column
narrows first so the thing keeps its room. When it is too narrow for both at
all, the thing keeps the whole width: clicking the chat's name then shows the
chat in its place, and Close brings the thing back.
- Clicking the chat's name at the top of the panel, or Go to on the menu
beside the chat's name above the thing, opens the chat itself in place of the
  thing.
- Opening another card from the chat in the panel, say a different app or
document, puts that thing in the middle of the window in place of the first,
and the panel follows it to its own chat and message. The card for whatever
  is open now reads Viewing.
- A deck already has a panel of its own on the right, with General
Discussion, Comments and History. That panel gets one more tab named after
the chat, wherever the deck was opened from, and the chat's name in the
  deck's title bar opens
the panel on that tab, so a deck never has two panels side by side. General
Discussion is the deck's own thread, the same one Just this shows for
  anything else.

Bolter remembers how you last left it, open or closed and how wide, and opens
the next thing you look at the same way. On a phone
the button takes you to the chat.

The list is one run in order of what you opened most recently, whatever kind
each row is, so the thing you were reading an hour ago is near the top.
Everything you have never opened comes after all of that, newest change
first, so the top of the list is always things you have actually looked at.
This holds on every type filter, All included. The order is yours: a
colleague opening the same doc moves nothing in your list. Each row says what
it is under its name, and which agent created it, with the agent's picture.
Something a person added, with no agent behind it, names where it lives
instead: a file names its chat first and then the workspace that keeps it; an
app names its workspace.

Opening something from its chat counts too: open a document, a deck or a
widget from the card in a chat and it goes to the top of the Library, and of
All in the sidebar, straight away.

The list holds still while it is open. Opening a row from it does not move that
row to the top until the next time you open the Library.

Long lists load a page at a time. When there is more than the list is showing,
a Show more row sits at the end.

## Pinning what you keep coming back to

Anything you keep coming back to can be pinned to the top. Right-click a row
and choose Pin, or drag the row onto the sidebar's Pinned section: it moves up
there, beside your pinned chats, on the Library and All tabs. Right-click a
pinned row and choose Unpin to put it back where recency puts it. On a phone,
press and hold a row and choose **Pin to the top** (or **Unpin**).

Pinned rows are held in the order you pinned them, newest first, and they are
taken out of the main run so nothing appears twice. You can pin up to fifty
things.

Your Library pins are yours. Nobody else sees them, they follow you to any
device you sign in on, and they survive the filters: narrowing by name, type,
workspace or project narrows the pinned rows the same way it narrows everything
else.

## Narrowing the list

Three things narrow the list.

- The sidebar's filter box filters by name, and it searches everything you
have, not just the rows already on screen, so something you made months ago
is one search away. It matches the chat or workspace a thing came from as
well as its name. Type at least two letters. The box is shared by every tab
of the sidebar, so a word typed there narrows the Library and stays when you
  switch tabs.
- The type picker beside the box, on the Library tab, starts on All, and can
be set to apps, files or artifacts. Each choice shows how many rows it would
leave, counted after the box and the scope, so a choice never turns out to be
empty. Long text you pasted into a message stays out of All, since it
belongs to the message it was sent with. It is still listed under files, and
pinning it brings it back to the top of All.
- The picker at the top of the sidebar narrows the Library to one workspace or
one project, along with your chats.

The Library's filters last for as long as you are in the app and reset on your
next visit, so a list that came back missing things is never a mystery.
