Billing and paying for usage

Bolts are the unit of usage. Add a payment method on the workspace's Billing and Usage tab to top up.

Work an agent does costs bolts. Bolts are Bolter's unit of usage, and they cover the model calls, tool runs, and any computers an agent needs.

Checking a balance

An agent can check its owner's balance and recent spend itself. Ask it how many bolts you have left and it will tell you.

Adding a payment method

Billing is per workspace, not per agent, and roles are covered in Workspaces, accounts, and limits. An owner or admin opens the workspace's Billing and Usage tab and adds a card there. Once a card is on file, the workspace tops up automatically rather than stopping mid-task.

A payment method is required before the first real charge or to top up. If you are on a trial or using a promo code that grants free months, you will receive a reminder in the app and a notification one week before your first charge is due. If no card is on file by the charge date, no charge is made and no new usage credit is added. Your workspace keeps whatever credit remains for the grace period shown in the billing page, then moves to the Free plan if you still have not added a card. Adding a card during the grace period charges within minutes and restores your plan with fresh usage credit.

Who can change billing

Only workspace owners and admins can see or change billing. A plain member of a workspace cannot, and an agent can never add or change a payment method on your behalf. If an agent tells you it added a card, that is wrong; the only way is through the Billing and Usage tab yourself.

Daily spend limits

Each agent has its own daily spend limit, so one agent cannot quietly spend the whole workspace balance. Open the agent, go to Advanced and then Usage, and pick one of three options:

  • Default keeps whatever the platform default is. An agent left on Default follows that default if it ever changes.
  • Custom amount is a figure you choose, in dollars per day.
  • No limit switches the limit off. The agent can then spend your workspace credit until the credit runs out.

An agent stops when it reaches its limit, mid-task if it has to, and tells you where it got to. It starts again at midnight UTC. If it stops in a chat you are watching, the note it leaves names the limit it hit and links to the setting.

When the whole workspace runs out of credit, its agents stop responding and each affected chat shows one notice. Workspace owners and admins also get one notification naming the workspace, once per outage; clicking it opens the workspace's Billing tab, and adding credit or upgrading clears it until the next time the credit runs out.

Only workspace owners and admins, or the person who created the agent, can change a limit.

Promo codes and trials

When you sign up, the current free trial offer is applied to your workspace automatically, so you start on the trial plan with nothing to enter. The signup pricing step shows what the trial gave you and what the plan costs per month once the free period ends. That figure is what Billing and Usage shows as your next charge, so the two agree. Billing and Usage itself shows the plan you are on, any discount that will price your next renewal, and the date and amount of that renewal; a free period shows up there as a renewal that is not charged rather than as a separate line. To redeem a code of your own, go to your workspace's Billing and Usage tab. If a code grants free months of a plan, it applies immediately with no payment method required. Your workspace upgrades to the plan right away and you can start using it.

Each code works once per workspace, so entering one that has already been applied reports that the workspace has already used it. That message is about the code, not about your plan: whatever it granted the first time is still in effect.

One free-months or discount code applies at a time. If your workspace already has one, including the signup trial, a second one of that kind is declined for as long as that first discount sits on the workspace, which can be longer than the free months it paid for. Codes that add credit or unlock a plan are not affected by this.

A payment method is needed before your first real charge. If you are using a promo code for free months, you will receive a reminder in the app and a notification one week before the first charge, giving you time to add a card.

Your balance never goes below zero

Because usage is measured after a piece of work finishes, an agent can sometimes cost slightly more than you had left. When that happens Bolter absorbs the difference. Your balance stops at zero, so a top-up arrives whole instead of partly paying off an overdraft.
