Direct messages with one person

When you have more than one direct chat with the same person, Bolter treats the busiest as your main chat and helps you tidy up the rest.

You can end up with more than one direct chat with the same person, for example when a group shrinks to just the two of you, or when you start a second chat on purpose. Bolter treats the one where the two of you have written the most messages as your main chat. Message on their profile opens it, and so does a message your assistant sends for you.

Tidying up

When you have several live chats with someone, their profile shows how many messages each one holds and offers Tidy up. It keeps the busiest chat and archives the rest. Archiving only changes your own list, nothing changes for them, and Undo on the confirmation puts the chats back.

Other places point you to the main chat too:

  • Starting to type in one of the other chats shows a note above the message box with Switch and archive this chat.
  • Right clicking one of them in the sidebar or on the profile offers Go to main chat.
  • When a group drops to just you and someone you already have a direct chat with, a card under the notice offers Switch and archive this chat, Just switch, or Keep both.

Starting a new chat

New chat tells you when you already have a chat with the person you picked and opens it by default. Start a second chat is still there if you want a separate conversation, and the panel says how many chats with them you would have.
